Arachnoiditis, also known as adhesive arachnoiditis, has become a growing health concern, with thousands of new cases being diagnosed annually in the U.S. While not all cases lead to complex problems, for those who experience the chronic pain and a decrease in mobility there is a great impact to the quality of life they enjoy.
Arachnoiditis is the result of the development of scar tissue or inflammation of the arachnoid, which is a membrane surrounding the spinal nerves. The resulting pressure causes the symptoms of this condition, which can range from pain and tingling nerve sensations to neurological conditions and even paralysis.
There are several possible causes for adhesive arachnoiditis, all of which can lead to varying degrees of severity in symptoms. Some of the most common include:
- Spinal stenosis, lumbar sacral stenosis
- Congenital abnormalities
- Spinal surgery
- Myelograms with Pantopaque® or Myodil®

Alternative Treatment: Stem Cell Therapy
Dr. Todd Malan, a pioneer in the use of stem cell therapy to treat Arachnoiditis, recently helped Dr. Sara Davis walk again and resume her medical career after becoming wheelchair bound due to Arachnoiditis.
Stem cell therapy can offer a treatment option that addresses the underlying cause of the condition, often scar tissue that is slowly strangling the arachnoid and leading to a range of symptoms. Going beyond the common pharmaceutical approach to treating symptoms, a successful stem cell treatment uses your body’s own natural healing power to regenerate healthy cells where damage has occurred.
Stem Cell Paste: Advancing Traditional Treatment
Recent advances in the use and implementation of autologous stem cells can now offer patients treatment that will support the regrowth of healthy tissue for improved symptoms over an extended period of time. While traditional therapies have been successful for many patients in reducing symptoms and restoring an improved quality of life, after a period of time the efficacy of the implanted stem cells begins to fade. This does not reverse any tissue repair or regrowth, but slows or halts the progression of healing.
The recent approval of further FDA studies using stem cell paste has opened the door for treating a wide range of inflammatory disorders and diseases. Stem cell paste in combination with IV SFV cell therapy offers patients a prolonged healing response that can address chronic inflammation and scar tissue damage, using a patients own harvested cells. As an enhancement to SVF IV, stem cell paste uses the adaptive properties of immature stem cells which are capable of stimulating the regrowth of healthy new cells in the treated area. When injected into the oxygen rich para-spinal muscles for an Arachnoiditis patient, the environment is desirable for the release of healing growth and anti-inflammatory factors. The results can be an improvement in mobility, reduced pain and a restored quality of life. The newly transplanted stem cell paste can support the natural healing process for an extended period of time, enabling the ongoing regeneration of healthy tissue.
