Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the most common lung diseases. It makes it difficult to breathe. There are two main forms of COPD: chronic bronchitis, which involves a long-term cough with mucus, and emphysema, which involves the destruction of the lungs over time. Most people with COPD have a combination of both conditions. Smoking is the leading cause of COPD. Standard treatment includes the use of bronchodilator inhalers, steroids, and supplemental oxygen.
Stem Cells And COPD
During the in-office and same-day procedure, mini liposuction is performed. A half of a cup of fat in harvested from around the abdominal region, which produces approximately 8 million stem cells. The stem cells are isolated put back into the patient’s joints or with COPD via an IV infusion. Local anesthesia is all that is needed and pain medication can be prescribed but is rarely necessary. Activated Stem Cells are returned back into the patient using an intravenous drip. In severe pulmonary cases, a bronchoscopy (injecting stem cells directly into the lungs) may be required.
Within a few hours after the patient receives the treatment, a majority of the stem cells would have hit the patient’s lungs. Shortly after that, the patient’s breathing pattern will improve dramatically. In 2-6 weeks there will be a noticeable repair to lung tissue. Substantial repair to lung tissue should be expected within 6 months
Research has been ongoing around the world that exploits the anti-inflammatory and immuno-modulatory properties of adult stem cells to control the loss of elasticity and damage in the small airways seen in patients with COPD.
