A cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak occurs when the outer membrane of the spinal cord, the dura mater, has developed a tiny hole or small tear, allowing spinal fluid to leak out. The leaking fluid is not replaced quickly enough by the body, causing a change in the level of fluid supporting the brain. The resulting pain can be the underlying cause of chronic headaches that affect daily life. A Spinal CSF leak may be diagnosed after a surgical procedure requiring an epidural or spinal tap, but the condition is often under-diagnosed when there are no related concerns. Also commonly called “an upright headache”, many patients experience symptoms when standing upright. Symptoms can also include nausea, dizziness and an increased sensitivity to light or noise. A CSF leak can be misdiagnosed as a migraine because of the similar symptoms. Although it rarely leads to life-threatening complications, most patients feel that their quality of life is greatly compromised, with some experiencing excruciating pain upon standing or moving around.
Unfortunately, current treatment options have proven to provide only temporary relief for the majority of patients. Many endure repeated treatments to manage symptoms without lasting results. Stem cell therapy has been used to treat CSF leak with success, allowing patients to experience permanent relief from debilitating pain as the body’s natural healing process is supported through the stem cell paste injections. Stem cells have the unique ability to mimic the damaged tissue cells, stimulating regrowth and healing in targeted areas. For patients with a CSF leak, the newly injected stem cells improve blood flow and enable the natural healing process to create a fibrin patch that will block the leak. This facilitated natural process can offer patients a lasting, permanent result and the hope for a future with less or no pain.
